Benfotiamine (S-benzyolthiamine-O-monophosphate) is a lipid-soluble,synthetic variant of thiamin (vitamin B-1). It's known to be the mostpotent of the allithiamines, or compounds present in trace quantitiesin roasted crushed garlic and other vegetables from the Allium genus.Benfotiamine is believed to raise the blood level of thiaminpyrophosphate (TPP), the biologically active coenzyme of thiamine, andstimulate transkotelase, a cellular enzyme essential for maintenance ofnormal glucose metabolic pathways. It may also help control formationof Advanced Glycation Endproducts (AGEs). AGEs increase as we age andglucose levels rise, potentially resulting in damage to healthy cellsincluding those in the cardiovascular system, visual and nervoussystems, thus benfotiamine may promote general vascular, nerve, andcellular health.
